Personal Training Certification
Earn your Personal Training Certification here at YMCA Northumberland. The YMCA Personal Training course is designed to certify you to coach one-on-one or small group training exercise and help your client set healthy lifestyle goals. This course is comprised of Trainer led sessions (delivered in-person and/or virtually) and self-directed online learning modules hosted on YMCA Canada’s Learning Management System (LMS), supplemented by handouts.

- Minimum of 16 years of age at the time of Certification
- Completion of YMCA Basic Fitness Theory $20 fee waived – Free course (online)
- First Aid – CPR-C (Can be completed in tandem or after course)
This course covers topics including:
- Being a YMCA Personal Trainer: Scope of Practice, 7 steps to a PT appointment, Physical Literacy
- Building Rapport and Fact Finding:Active Listening, Fact finding, Chronic Disease awareness
- Goal Setting: Considerations for Strength Training for Diverse Demographics, Self-Efficacy and Motivation
- Show & Assess:Fitness Assessments, Exercise Analysis, Program Design, Free Weight Exercises and Tracking Tools
- 8 to 10 hours per week of online self-study
- 1 to 3 hours per week of apprenticeship with a certified Personal Trainer
Case Study
- Up to 40 hours of in-person classroom instruction
- Practical observation by a certified Trainer or Trainer Educator with a score of 2.5 or better with no less that 2.0 on any BehaviourGrid

This will be delivered through the online LMS (Learning Management System).
The YMCA Basic Fitness Theory Course is laid out in 6 parts:
Part 1: Leadership and Program Planning
Part 2: Basic Anatomy and Physiology
Part 3: Principles of Training
Part 4: The Respiratory, Cardiovascular and Energy Systems
Part 5: Mindfulness and Nutrition
Part 6: Safety
There is a $20 per learner course fee to access the e-learning materials on our LMS. This fee will cover the cost of YMCA Basic Theory plus the applied theory modules for your specialty. This fee will be waived at the moment.
To become certified, a learner must complete all requirements outlined including achieving a score of 85% on the final exam found on the LMS.

Ymca Basic Theory Fitness Course
This introductory YMCA Basic Theory Fitness course (30 hours) serves as the first step in the YMCA Fitness Instructor Training program and the YMCA Personal Training Instructor course. The goal of the Basic Theory course is to prepare the student to enter the workforce with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a successful career in fitness.
YMCA Aquatics Fitness Instructor Course
The Aquatic Fitness Instructor course is designed to certify people to deliver YMCA group fitness classes that are held in water – both shallow and deep. This course is comprised of Trainer led sessions (delivered in-person and/or virtually) and self-directed online learning modules hosted on YMCA Canada’s Learning Management System (LMS), supplemented by handout
Details
- 4 – 6 hours per week of on-line self-study
- 1 – 3 hours per week of apprenticeship
- 21 hours of classroom instruction
- CPR-C (completed by the end of the course)
- Complete the Demonstrate and Describe Evaluation
- Practical Observation and Evaluation by a YMCA Fitness Trainer or Training Educator of the candidate a class and achieves a minimum of 2.5 on the Behaviour Grids, with no less than 2.0 on any one grid.

YMCA Fitness- Group Strength Instructor Course
Description: The YMCA Fitness- Group Strength Instructor Course is designed to certify people to deliver YMCA group fitness classes that fall into the category of strength (e.g. bars and plates, kettlebell, muscle fit, etc.). Each part is comprised of Trainer led sessions (delivered in-person and/or virtually) and self-directed online learning modules hosted on YMCA Canada’s Learning Management System (LMS), supplemented by handouts.
