Child Care

YMCA Northumberland now has 22 Child Care Centres to help serve the families of Northumberland County. We are committed to your children’s education and development and to maximizing the personal growth of each young person in our care. We provide a professionally developed curriculum, unique to the YMCA that in the past few years has gone national.

YMCA Northumberland offers a unique program within Northumberland County which offers rural families the opportunity to have children of mixed ages attend the same program. One of the many benefits of a Family Grouping program is that it supports children that are nervous to start their first day of care, or who struggle with separation anxiety by allowing them to transition into child care with their older sibling. This approach offers a sense of comfort and feeling of safety by having their older sibling by their side during this transition to out of home care. Our highly-skilled, caring, compassionate Registered Early Childhood Educators and Child Care Assistants are qualified and trained to work with all age groups, ensuring that the environment is set up to meet the needs of all the children in our care.

Follows National Playing To Learn CurriculumTM

Our toddler programs encourage children to explore their environment at their own pace with a hands-on approach that stimulates natural learning. The continual enhancement of social, emotional and physical development is a major focus.

Program Features: Exploring the indoors + Outdoors, music and movement, discovering creative and sensory material, puzzles, stories, blocks, dramatic play and learning to play with others.

Follows National Playing To Learn CurriculumTM

Our preschool programs provide opportunities for children to make choices based on their natural desire to learn new things and become more self-reliant. Emphasis is also placed on learning to get along with others.

Program Features: Exploring the indoors and outdoors, introductory to the arts (visual, dramatic and music), discovering science, engaging in mathematics and literacy activities, developing social skills, gross and fine motor skills and problem-solving!

The kindergarten program is a supportive extension to your child’s full-day kindergarten program. This program provides families with a safe and secure after-school location for their children accompanied by caring, active staff who lead fun and original programming focused on physical activity, nutrition and wellness. Learning is done through a variety of fun, developmentally appropriate, play-based activities.

Follows National Playing To Learn CurriculumTM

Our School Age Program follows the YMCA A Place to Connect™ Curriculum. Children are actively engaged with Registered Early Childhood Educators to create program plans based on children’s interests. Programs include daily physical activity, opportunities for leadership development and helping children learn new skills.

YMCA Playing to Learn CurriculumTM

We all know kids love to play. But did you know they also learn while they play? We’ve learned that kids at play are already building the foundation for their major life skills, including language and literacy, mathematics, science and technology, and the arts. Playtime experiences are an important way to understand how kids learn, and how we can help them learn more effectively.
