Planned Gifts

The most common planned gifts are gifts via wills or gifts of life insurance. By making a planned gift, you are investing in the future of YMCA Northumberland and the communities it serves.

Make a gift in your will

Your bequest can include cash, securities, retirement funds, real estate or other property. Talk to your lawyer or adviser about the options. The most common types of bequests are:

Residual bequests: Designate all or part of your estate to YMCA Northumberland. The advantage is that there is no need to update that part of your will, even as your estate adjusts in size.

Specific bequests: Designate a fixed dollar amount or a specific property to YMCA Northumberland. The advantage is that the size of the gift remains fixed and is the first to be distributed.

Sample Statements to add to your will:

I, ____________________, bequeath to YMCA Northumberland  ________% of the residue of my estimate for its sole use absolutely.

or for a specific legacy amount

I, ____________________, bequeath to YMCA Northumberland $_________________ from my estate for its sole use absolutely.

Make a gift of life insurance

A cost-effective method of donating to YMCA Northumberland that can create a future gift that is considerably larger than many donors could make during their lifetime.

Three ways to donate life insurance:

1. Donate an existing policy: receive a charitable tax receipt for the net cash surrender value and any premiums paid after the donation date.
2. Donate a new policy: receive a charitable tax receipt for any premiums paid after the donation date.
3. Make YMCA Northumberland the beneficiary of your individual or workplace insurance. Your estate then receives a charitable tax receipt.

A meaningful gift with tax benefits

The benefits of donating a gift of securities to the YMCA are two-fold. First, you will receive a tax receipt for the fair market value of the donation in the amount of the closing trading price on the day YMCA Northumberland will receive the security. Second, your donation is exempt from the capital gains tax that typically applies to the sale of a security.
